We know we have a longing for something higher and superior to what we sense. Nature suggests its ultimate author. Mankind has a deep longing for a life free of material concerns, free from human enganglements, free to seek the Holy Spirit and invite the Spirit to dwell within the self as a Beloved in a human tabernacle. These aspirations are among the ideals of a Trappist and a Carthusian. When we seek the life of a Carthusian we seek the innermost and most intense spiritual longings of the human soul. Although most of us cannot be a Carthusian, anyone properly motivated, can seek his goals and participate in His life, if even it be outside the Charterhouse.
